do you ever hesitate to open the the newspaper or turn on the television, dreading to learn of yet another tragedy or demonstration of humanity's capacity for cruelty and sin? spinnig out of control- and yet we know that's not true:"i am God, and there is no other;I am God, and there is no one like Me,
declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying , 'My purpose will be estabished, and i will accomplish all my good pleasure"'(ISAIAH 56:9-10),
EL Elyon is the name that designates God as the sovereign ruler of all the universe. It was El Elyon, "God most high who...delivered" Abraham's enemies into his hand (Genesis 14:20). It was the Most High God who was and is the Redeemer of Israel (Psalm 78:35). And it is the Most High God who rules today over the affairs of men. "For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation...He does according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth; and no one can ward off His hand or say to Him, "What have You done?" (Daniel 4:34-35).
What difference does it make in your life to realize that God is sovereign and that ultimately nothing can happen without His sanction or permission? Will you let these truths guide your response to whatever happens today?

Oh, beloved of God, wouldn't you like to know that at the end of your life-not to mention the end of this day, the end of this year-you could declare, as the apostle Paul did, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept faith" (2 Timothy 4:7)?
Wouldn't you like to be assured that you could experience all the difficult situations Paul faced and sat in total sincerity and truth, without one drop of egotism, "Follow me. Be an imitator of me, even as I am of Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1; Philippians 3:17)?
Can you imagine having such confidence? Confidence, not brashness. Confidence in the midst of cross fire. Confidence even if the government threatened to take your life for what you believed and lived. Confidence that you could stand alone, even though others deserted you ecause they loved this present life more than the next.
This is the heart I long for, and I trust you do too, my friend. And because Paul, a human like us, had it, we can have hearts that beat with bold faith and passion for God if we follow his example.
When your heart belongs to God and you will do to His will, you can walk in the confidence that God will lead you by His Spirit, step by step. Our responsibility is simply to commit our way unto Him in faith's trust, and He will bring it to pass (See Proverbs 3:5-6). |
